Sago and Starch Effluent — Salem's Biggest Challenge
Salem is one of India's major centres for sago (javvarisi) and tapioca starch production. Processing tapioca uses large volumes of water and produces effluent that is extremely high in organic load and starch, often acidic, and can carry cyanogenic compounds from the tuber. Untreated, it causes severe odour and pollution of nearby water bodies, especially during the peak crushing season.
