How an MBBR Plant Works
At the heart of an MBBR plant are thousands of small plastic carriers, called media, that move freely inside an aeration tank. Each carrier has a large protected surface on which bacteria grow as a thin biofilm. Air from diffusers keeps the media moving and supplies oxygen, so the bacteria break down organic pollutants in the sewage.
Because the bacteria live on the media rather than floating freely, an MBBR holds much more active biomass in a smaller tank than a conventional activated sludge plant. A sieve at the outlet keeps the media inside the reactor.

What Makes a Good MBBR Plant
Not every MBBR plant performs the same. The difference usually comes down to a few design details:
- Media quality and fill ratio: We use media with a high protected surface area and fill the reactor to the right percentage for your load — too little media limits treatment, too much stops it from moving freely.
- Fine-bubble aeration: Correctly sized diffusers and blowers provide enough oxygen without wasting electricity.
- Outlet sieves: Strong stainless steel sieves keep the media inside the tank and are easy to clean.
- Good settling: A well-designed tube settler or clarifier prevents biological solids from escaping into the treated water.
- Equalisation: A properly sized equalisation tank protects the reactor from sudden surges.
Common MBBR Problems We Fix
When MBBR plants built by others are not working, we usually find media that has stopped moving, clogged diffusers, damaged outlet sieves or no sludge removal routine. Most of these can be corrected without rebuilding the plant. We inspect, test and fix only what is needed.
Upgrading an Old STP to MBBR
Many older plants in Coimbatore were built as conventional activated sludge systems and are now overloaded. Instead of building new tanks, we can often convert the existing aeration tank into an MBBR by adding media, new diffusers and an outlet sieve. This increases treatment capacity within the same footprint and at a fraction of the cost of a new plant.
