How an SBR Plant Works
Instead of water flowing continuously through separate tanks, an SBR performs every treatment step in the same tank, one after another, controlled by a PLC timer.
- Fill: Sewage enters the reactor from the equalisation tank.
- React: Air is supplied and bacteria break down the organic matter. Alternating aerated and non-aerated periods can also reduce nitrogen.
- Settle: Air is switched off and the biological sludge settles to the bottom in still conditions.
- Decant: Clear treated water is drawn off from the top by a decanter.
- Idle and waste: Excess sludge is removed and the tank waits for the next cycle.
Most plants use two or more reactors so that one fills while the other treats, giving continuous handling of incoming sewage.

Designing a Reliable SBR

Running an SBR Day to Day
An SBR is automated, but it still needs a trained eye. A good daily routine takes the operator about half an hour and keeps the plant stable:
- Check that each reactor is moving through its cycle on time and that the decanter is drawing clear water
- Look at the settled sludge level and colour, and waste sludge when it rises above the set mark
- Confirm that blowers, valves and level sensors are working and the PLC shows no alarms
- Note flow, pH and visual quality of the treated water in the log book
- Clean screens and check the equalisation tank for floating matter
During college holidays or low-occupancy months, we adjust cycle timings and aeration so the bacteria stay healthy and the plant does not waste electricity.
